"Texting or Textbooks?" posted by ~Ray

Yesterday’s reports that NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg has another plan to help poor and low-income students. Jennifer Medina writes. “The city is planning an intensive campaign that would use cell phones to help motivate students most of them minorities and from poor families in two dozen schools.” Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein said “How do you get people to think about achievement in communities where for historical or other reasons there isn’t necessarily demand for that?” Also yesterday three students from the gave presentations on access to college at the NYC Public High School 47. The school has a failing grade but you can’t tell it by the students teachers or the graduation rate. The schools and teachers lack resources not motivation -- something that just handing out cell phones isn't going to fix. P. S. 47 students wanted to know about scholarships grants and the cost of tuition. None of the students or teachers for that matter knew that CUNY offers significant tuition assistance to high school graduates in NYC. WRI had come to encourage students to come to CUNY connect them to the community of WRI and CUNY and to share openly and honestly how we all got to college in spite of obstacles. I wish Bloomberg and Klein had been at P. S. 47. I wish that Mayor Bloomberg saw his opportunities to change policies that impact students their families and their futures as easily as he sees how to fiddle with students' behavior. A student from this year’s WRI class. Chantale Soekhoe is a junior at Hunter College and has a 3.8 G. P. A. She had this to say about the mayor’s new program. “Policies such as the recent Education Incentive Initiative proposed by Bloomberg are exactly why I aspire to be a policy analyst. The flawed ideology in providing cell phones celebrity text contacts concert tickets and other material goods in exchange for improved academic performance equates to bad policy. This devalues the promotion of education and further emphasizes extrinsic motivation in an already overly materialistic money hungry and consumerist society. Instead of hiring consultants and conferring with advertising agencies. Klein and Bloomberg should shift their focus to tackling the root cause of the issue which is why Black and Latino youth in 'hard pressed' neighborhoods are performing poorly in school. Monetary efforts should be poured into real assistance such as providing updated resources in under-funded schools scholarships and grants and educational opportunities. Sticking a band aid on a wound doesn’t allow for healing it only covers the unsightly abrasion and puts it at risk of infection without the proper treatment. City officials need to recognize that this is the nature of this policy and seek alternatives that will actually address the issues in minority communities by making substantial long term investments in the social and economic health of their struggling residents.” Another student in the class reminded me that we have to have resources in poor communities to create a level playing field. NYC’s playing field has to be leveled with the plow of good policies- cell phones are a band-aid approach. Chantale has a good list of policy focuses and I have written in the past of. Chantale and the rest of WRI are open to meet with the mayor to dialogue together on policies for economic security in NYC. Whenever you are ready. Mr. Mayor just text us. Ms. Lane. Chantale Soekhoe and the other WRI student leaders are thoughtful and clear in concluding that the Mayor's incentives to promote good behaviors are short-sighted and ill-conceived. I am especially concerned about the suggestion that minority teenagers in poor communities are in need of behavior modication to understand the value of achievement. Teenagers enrolled in college come to WRI offices on a daily basis with letters from the city's Human Resources Administration (HRA) that threaten to discontinue their family's already meager public assistance budget if they remain in college. They persevere against tremendous odds and fight to stay in school because they value achievement and most importantly they value work with benefits that would move them out of poverty. Giving cash to teenagers and families trapped in poverty is not an anti-poverty measure--it shifts the focus from looking at the power structures and systems that actually perpetuate poverty. Allowing families to benefit from the real skills and credentials that access to education (from GED to college)affords is a policy initiative that has worked in the past and will continue to work if it's made a priority in NYC. If you be to practice withsolved problems try checking out Schaums or REA from the library which both bring home the bacon out anywhere from 2000-3000 problemssome of which is good. Also if you want challenging problems check out the pSets onMITs OCW physics site.... really I am currently using Physics for scientists and engineers. Third Edition by Raymond A. Serway. I sight it to be pretty extensive and analytical. Uses a lot of symbols rather than numbers which is pretty useful. Not a lot of examples but the ones stated are extensive and sustains concepts that can be implicated into many other problems. I recommend it. Hope this helps. Our school uses Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday. Resnick and Wallace. I started in late February after i came back from HMMT and did all the odd problems after the chapters i finished in mid-april and then barely looked over barrons command before taking the exams i got two 5s so in my opinions halliday's book is pretty awesome.

"Bookless in Baghdad - a review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 21:32:57

This book by encompasses two of my passions - reading and the personal essay. The book is Tharoor’s collection of essays on literary topics which undergo appeared in various publications over the past decade. Divided into sections to make things easier for the reader the book travels through the course of Tharoor’s life -  growing up with books (’Inspirations’) literary influences (’Reconsiderations’) ruminations on books reading and literature (’The Literary Life’) and the last two chapters called ‘Appropriations’ and ‘Interrogations’. The first chapter ‘Growing up with books in India’ makes you be to write your own act on the subject. Each reader will sight in it memories desire forgotten. If you ever read under the covers or waited like me for the school year to start only to be to construe the new text books then you’ll enjoy this essay. Other chapters consider a reminiscence of India’s like affair with Wodehouse and stories on Rushdie. V S Naipaul. Malcolm Muggeridge. Winston Churchill and Alexander Pushkin. has not dimmed Tharoor’s inclination for reading or writing.  His travels and stints across the world comes across in his writing. The title ‘Bookless in Baghdad’ comes from his visit to a book souk in Baghdad - a street beat of books that found a lot of takers even with the threat of bombs in the air. For Indians images of the pavement stalls at Flora Fountain in Mumbai or Calcutta’s College Street will go to object. Reading a book about books and reading is a pleasure any book-lover or writer ordain welcome. If you’re looking for an insight into the reading habits of a global Indian and a prolific writer look no further. "Expensive College Text Books or Course Packs Instead" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 22:18:19

Every semester. I am amazed again at how expensive college text books can be. It is not that there are no ways to buy cheap text books. There absolutely are. The problem is that the professors act for too long request too few college text books to the stories or order them to the wrong stores the ones that rush the highest prices. If I had measure to buy every college text book online. I would never have to pay an exorbitant fee. I would be able to get a good deal on all of my reading material. As it stands there are often not enough used text books to go around. Some classes dress their reading material too frequently while other professors are actually designing new classes every the semester. It is not fair to us poor students. Some professors in my opinion the nice ones get around the problem of expensive college text books by using cover packs instead. Course packs are much easier and cheaper alternative to text books. Because you undergo them printed yourself at write shops you can get cover packs for a fraction of what college text books be. There really is no comparison. The only problem is that course packs do not last nearly as long and often the quality is lower. Because you are making the copies yourself there can be small errors that slip into a college course case. Nonetheless. I vastly prefer them to college text books. I do not care that they are more cheaply move or that they do not look as pretty. They have all the information that they need and they are often more up to go out than college text books. If you do have time you should look at the cover materials ahead of measure. If you intend it right you can often get your college text books online by the second week of categorise. In the meantime you can keep up on the reading by borrowing the college text books of your classmates. Although this approach can be somewhat inconvenient it still saves you a lot of money and so is exceed in the desire run. If you are really on the roll you can sight text books used before they run out. Used college text books are often much more affordable than new ones and they are usually comfort in pretty good instruct. The problem is that they are in such bespeak. Everyone wants one.
